Millie the Black Kite

It is based on the story of Broome’s famous bird ‘Millie’ who was reared by wildlife carers and released as an adult to be a wild bird. She became very well known to Broome locals for teasing their dogs on the beach, begging food and cuddles at food outlets. She sought shelter on a cruise ship when we went onto cyclone alert and ended up in Bali.  Thousands of signatures on a partition could not bring her home due to the Australian bio security laws and the fear of spreading bird Flu. 

Her image is included in the Skate Park mural near BRAC.

The performance is the result of a collaboration between ‘Big MAMA productions’ Broome and Indonesian puppet company ‘Flying Balloons’. The performance will be included as part of the Shinju Matsuri programme.
