Meet the Judges

Angela Bakker

Angela Bakker is a highly respected Broome ceramicist who has continued a workshop practice since training as a potter in London in the 1950s.

Bakker trained at Hammersmith College in London in the traditional aspects of ceramic production, with an emphasis on drawing, history, museum studies and, in her final year, working in a small factory with production throwing. It was an intense and traditional art training environment.

She incorporates a lot of ‘stuff’ into her pieces, adding precious objects she has found. Her approach of combining techniques has become an integral part of her entire practice.

Bakker is renowned for her quirky teapots and other objects that embody a unique personality. She uses local Kimberley clays to create sculpture and functional wares.

Mark Norval

Mark Norval has been working as an artist and art teacher in the Kimberley for the last 47 years.

He is a painter, printmaker and sculptor, with the Kimberley landscape and the people who live there found throughout his work.

Mark is a six-time outright winner of the Kimberley Art Prize and a two-time winner of the Shinju Matsuri Outright Art Award.

Lynley Nargoodah 

Lynley Nargoodah is a Nyikina/Walmajarri woman from Fitzroy Crossing. She is a mother, an artist and the Chairwoman at Mangkaja Arts Resource Agency Art Centre in Fitzroy Crossing.

Lynley has been a director and arts worker at Mangkaja for over three years and continues to lead the organisation and assist in the training and engagement of young people at the centre.

Nargoodah has undertaken art industry training in various subjects, including art handling and conservation, curatorial and marketing, and is a graduate of ANKA’s Arts Worker Extension Program.
